(I had never heard any part of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single_Ladies_%28Put_a_Ring_on_It%29\">that Beyonc&eacute; song<\/a> until <a href=\"http:\/\/www.televisionwithoutpity.com\/show\/glee\/preggers.php\">last week&#8217;s episode of <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Glee<\/span><\/a>.)  And I&#8217;m generally pretty bad about keeping in touch with friends.  But it&#8217;s always nice to hear about people I know finding success and happiness, even if it does remind me how out of touch I am with, well, most things.<\/p>\n<p>From the current issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanfordalumni.org\/news\/magazine\/2009\/sepoct\/\"><span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Stanford<\/span> magazine<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/snout.org\/hotsheet\/uploaded_images\/class_notes_alder-777043.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/snout.org\/hotsheet\/uploaded_images\/class_notes_alder-777040.png\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I got to know Alder pretty well in my senior year, when we took a writing workshop class together, and I&#8217;m thrilled that he&#8217;s actually getting somewhere with his writing&#8211;even if it&#8217;s not fiction.  (We all know that <a href=\"http:\/\/whatever.scalzi.com\/2008\/02\/11\/unasked-for-advice-to-writers-about-money\/\">non-fiction pays better<\/a> anyway.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not a wine connoisseur, but if I were, I&#8217;d definitely subscribe to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vinography.com\/\">Vinography<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/snout.org\/HotSheet\/CKL.jpg\" alt=\"CKL\" title=\"CKL\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I freely admit that I am not part of the mainstream cultural conversation.
