Because their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writersofthefuture.com\/contest-rules-writers\/\">rules<\/a> specify:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>5. The Contest is open only to those who have not professionally published a novel or short novel, or more than one novelette, or more than three short stories, in any medium. Professional publication is deemed to be payment of at least six cents per word, and at least 5,000 copies, or 5,000 hits.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;ve only made two professional short fiction sales. But this other deal went public on Monday&#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-kELG3T2WQdA\/VUrU1GQQbdI\/AAAAAAAB0O0\/egIxeCvvKGs\/s1600\/wk-deal-news.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-kELG3T2WQdA\/VUrU1GQQbdI\/AAAAAAAB0O0\/egIxeCvvKGs\/s400\/wk-deal-news.png\" \/><\/a><br \/><small>(thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/queryshark.blogspot.com\/\">Query Shark<\/a> for forwarding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/book-deals\/index.html\">PW<\/a> announcement)<\/small><\/div>\n<p>So, to use the parlance, I&#8217;ve &#8220;pro&#8217;d out&#8221; of WOTF. Which is a bit of a bummer, as I&#8217;ve been submitting to them on and off since high school&#8230; but overall, I can&#8217;t really complain about selling two novels to a major publisher!<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the obvious, here are more reasons I&#8217;m excited about signing with <a href=\"http:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/thomasdunne\">Thomas Dunne Books<\/a> in particular:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They recently published my fellow Portlander <a href=\"http:\/\/periscopestudio.com\/about-periscope-studio\/members\/benjamin-dewey\/\">Benjamin Dewey<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/tragedyseries.tumblr.com\/\">Tragedy Series<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ISBN=1250060621\/curtiscchensfree\">a beautiful hardcover edition<\/a><\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re also publishing my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ballybran.org\/vp\/08xii\/\">VPXII<\/a> classmate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clairehumphrey.ca\/\">Claire Humphrey<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dickensianfantasy.blogspot.com\/2014\/11\/its-starting-to-sink-in.html\">debut novel<\/a> next year<\/li>\n<li>My editor is the same guy who published David Wong&#8217;s novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ISBN=1250035953\/curtiscchensfree\"><i>John Dies at the End<\/i><\/a> (and its sequel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ISBN=1250036658\/curtiscchensfree\"><i>This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don&#8217;t Touch It<\/i><\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Long story short: SQUEE.<\/p>\n<p>This is, of course, not the end by any means: I hope to write more than two Kangaroo books, and I have no idea what to expect when the first one hits next year.
