No, actually, I do know why I still care: because it continues to be, warts and all, a pretty good representation of what Hollywood cares about. And that’s important, insofar as that small group of people exports culture to the rest of the world, and it says something about what stories are deemed important right now.

Up through 2016, the AMPAS would publish a “view by film” count on their official list of nominees for the year, so you could easily see how many nominations a given film had received. But then they stopped doing that for some reason, so now I have to do my own data entry, as shown below.

TL;DR: these are the films that each got 2+ nominations this year, in alphabetical order:

All Quiet on the Western Front (9)

Avatar: The Way of Water (4)

Babylon (3)

The Banshees of Inisherin (9)

The Batman (3)

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (5)

Elvis (8)

Everything Everywhere All at Once (11)

The Fabelmans (7)

Living (2)

Tár (6)

Top Gun: Maverick (6)

Triangle of Sadness (3)

The Whale (3)

Women Talking (2)

Titles in BOLD above are up for Best Picture. That category has certainly gotten more… interesting since they expanded it to ten nominees instead of the standard five.

Anyway, here’s the raw data:

There’s probably a better way to do this in Airtable, but this seemed like the easiest way to get what I wanted. Now you know, and (say it with me now) knowing is half the battle!

I’m not sure why I still care about the Academy Awards, but I do.
