{"id":1830,"date":"2020-06-15T14:44:02","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T21:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtiscchen.com\/journal\/?p=1830"},"modified":"2020-07-24T13:54:47","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T20:54:47","slug":"all-words-are-black","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtiscchen.com\/journal\/2020\/06\/15\/all-words-are-black\/","title":{"rendered":"All Words are Black"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You may have seen the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BlackoutBestsellerList\">#BlackoutBestsellerList<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/blackpublishingpower\/\">#BlackPublishingPower<\/a> tags trending on social media in the past few days. <strong>TL;DR: sometime this week, buy at least two books written by Black authors to show the publishing industry that readers want more of the same.<\/strong> You could even go the extra mile and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elitedaily.com\/p\/22-black-owned-bookstores-you-can-order-from-online-22952386\">buy said books from a Black-owned independent bookstore<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BTW, what&#8217;s up with the title of this post: since most physical books are printed on white or light-colored paper, the ink used is always dark or black. That means whatever you might be reading, <em>all the words are black<\/em>. DID I JUST BLOW YOUR MIND?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtiscchen.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/tap-head.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1831\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checking out either of the hashtags linked above will lead you to a wealth of non-fiction books about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoranealehurston.com\/books\/\">Black history<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ijeomaoluo.com\/writing\">how to address<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibramxkendi.com\/how-to-be-an-antiracist-1\">systemic racism<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mikkikendall.com\/books-2\/\">individual experiences<\/a>. All of those are great, but if you&#8217;re looking for novels, please allow me to recommend a few living authors who could use your support (the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/blog\/2018\/06\/22\/where-start-octavia-butler\">Octavia Butler&#8217;s work<\/a> is definitely worth reading, but IMHO the point of this exercise is to boost currently working writers):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alayadawnjohnson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TroubleSaints_final_cov_FOR-REVEAL-360x570.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"446\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alayadawnjohnson.com\/book\/trouble-the-saints\/\"><strong>Alaya Dawn Johnson<\/strong>&#8216;s new book <em>Trouble the Saints<\/em><\/a> drops next week, and you can check out her past works, including Nebula finalist <em>The Summer Prince<\/em> and Nebula winner <em>Love is the Drug<\/em>, right now. DO IT! DO IT NOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.booksense.com\/images\/655\/101\/9781250101655.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781250101655\"><strong>K. Ancrum<\/strong>&#8216;s fabulous <em>The Weight of the Stars<\/em><\/a> didn&#8217;t get nearly enough attention last year, but you can help rectify that oversight by pre-ordering her <a href=\"https:\/\/kancrum.com\/new-books\/\">forthcoming<\/a> <em>Darling<\/em> as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/nkjemisin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Jemisin_CityWeBecame-HC-660x1001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"427\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nkjemisin.com\/bibliography\/\">N.K. Jemisin<\/a><\/strong> has been crushing it from jump and you can&#8217;t go wrong with any of her stuff, really, but you can get in on the ground floor of her new series with <em><a href=\"http:\/\/nkjemisin.com\/series\/the-great-cities\/\">The City We Became<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/books2read-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/CACHE\/images\/ubl_book_images\/display_image_m2FJsWS\/7381c35c64b51acacbce64432fb26886\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jasminesilvera.com\/about\/\">Jasmine Silvera<\/a><\/strong> writes about &#8220;things that go bump in the night, including headboards.&#8221; Yes, that means romance, and yes, it&#8217;s for everyone. Her latest book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jasminesilvera.com\/portfolio\/binding-shadows\/\">Binding Shadows<\/a><\/em>, is the first in the Tooth &amp; Spell trilogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope at least two of the books linked above will appeal to you. Feel free to get more than two! But if they&#8217;re not your cup of tea, and you still want to support Black authors (including up-and-coming writers), please consider donating to the <a href=\"http:\/\/carlbrandon.org\/about\/\">Carl Brandon Society<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/blacksciencefictionsociety.com\/About\">Black Science Fiction Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(And no, we&#8217;re not going to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/06\/08\/872470156\/-publishingpaidme-authors-share-their-advances-to-expose-racial-disparities\">#PublishingPaidMe<\/a> right now. That&#8217;s a whole other topic.
