{"id":1346,"date":"2007-01-11T10:25:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-11T18:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtiscchen.com\/journal\/2007\/01\/11\/children-of-men\/"},"modified":"2007-01-11T10:25:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-11T18:25:00","slug":"children-of-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtiscchen.com\/journal\/2007\/01\/11\/children-of-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Children of Men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Saturday, D and I saw <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Children of Men<\/span> (after it finally opened at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.movietickets.com\/house_detail.asp?house_id=3363\">our local AMC<\/a>), and it is <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">amazing.<\/span>  One of the best of last year, no question.<\/p>\n<p>You can compare the premise to any number of dystopian future visions&#8211;D picked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ISBN=1593073895\/curtiscchensfree\">Damn Nation<\/a>; I went for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ISBN=1563899809\/curtiscchensfree\">Y: The Last Man<\/a>&#8211;but <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Children of Men<\/span> breathes life into its ideas, making the fantastic plausible but never mundane.  Yes, there is at least one MacGuffin.  Yes, the movie could have been a lot longer and more sprawling.  But this film knows what it is and isn&#8217;t about, and sticks to its story, and I think it&#8217;s stronger for that commitment to narrative.<\/p>\n<p>I also need to mention the phenomenal cinematography, which features several long, continuous tracking shots, simulating the gritty reality of a documentary and giving the action scenes a visceral immediacy.  I&#8217;d argue that <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Children of Men<\/span> is worth seeing for the Bexhill sequence alone&#8211;yes, it&#8217;s that fucking good.
