If you only know director Guillermo del Toro from his Hollywood studio projects&#8211;<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Mimic<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Blade II<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Hellboy<\/span>&#8211;you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re missing.  Which is not to say I didn&#8217;t enjoy those three movies as well; <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Pan&#8217;s Labyrinth<\/span> just operates on a different level.  It might even be more effective for non-Spanish-speaking viewers (like me), because it drops you into two unfamiliar settings: the end of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Civil_War\">Spanish Civil War<\/a>, and a fairy-tale fantasy world.
