{"id":1343,"date":"2007-01-23T10:14:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-23T18:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtiscchen.com\/journal\/2007\/01\/23\/adapted-from-what\/"},"modified":"2007-01-23T10:14:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-23T18:14:00","slug":"adapted-from-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtiscchen.com\/journal\/2007\/01\/23\/adapted-from-what\/","title":{"rendered":"Adapted from what?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oscars.org\/79academyawards\/noms.html\">This year&#8217;s Academy Award nominations<\/a> were announced earlier today, and the most bizarre, I have to say, is <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Borat Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan<\/span> for <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Adapted Screenplay.<\/span>  I mean, really, that&#8217;s two words, and both of them seem wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, no huge surprises.  I&#8217;m rooting for <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Monster House<\/span> to win <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Animated Feature<\/span>, but I expect <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Cars<\/span> to take it.  I won&#8217;t feel too bad about that, since I have friends at Pixar, but <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Monster House<\/span> was a better realized story about growing up.<\/p>\n<p>In some ways, I find the Oscar nominations more interesting than the actual winners&#8211;at this point, the whole thing turns into a psychology experiment, where people will vote for a film they like in a category they don&#8217;t really understand (hello, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Sound Editing<\/span> vs. <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Sound Mixing<\/span>) just so that it will win <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">something<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Other winners I&#8217;d be happy to see:  <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Children of Men<\/span> for <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Cinematography<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Pan&#8217;s Labyrinth<\/span> for <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Makeup<\/span>, and <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Superman Returns<\/span> for <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Visual Effects<\/span>.
