It&#8217;s a terminology issue&#8211;I don&#8217;t make <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">resolutions<\/span>.  I&#8217;m not <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/query\/z?c111:H.RES.18.IH:\">Congress<\/a>, or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unoosa.org\/oosa\/SpaceLaw\/gares\/html\/gares_26_2777.html\">United Nations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I also don&#8217;t set <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">goals<\/span>, because that word has been poisoned by years of working in <a href=\"http:\/\/uncertain4sure.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/wasted-day-in-dilbertville.html\">Dilbertville<\/a>.  (I reserve the right to punch, in either nose or neck, the next person who invites me to discuss &#8220;stretch goals&#8221; or &#8220;sandbagging.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>No, I make <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">commitments.<\/span>  Besides being the name of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00018D3XW\/curtiscchensfree\">a great movie<\/a>, the word implies something personal.  It&#8217;s most often used in reference to relationships; <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">e.g.<\/span>, a man&#8217;s fear of same cited as why he ain&#8217;t popped the question yet.  When you commit to something, you give your word, you make a promise, you take an oath.  And that&#8217;s not just a piece of paper&#8211;that is a matter of honor.<\/p>\n<p>So you can hold me to the commitments below.  If I fail to meet any of them, it won&#8217;t be for lack of trying.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>post a new <a href=\"http:\/\/snout.org\/512\"><span style=\"font-style:italic;\">512 Words or Fewer<\/span><\/a> story (text and audio) every Friday<\/li>\n<li>finish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snout.org\/FF\/text\/story.html#nofate\">&#8220;Freefall: No Fate&#8221;<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>post a new chapter every month until finished (ETC: May 2009)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>get 2 short stories published in pro\/semi-pro markets\n<ul>\n<li>1 NEW submission every month! (resubmit rejected stories continuously)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>critique 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ballybran.org\/vp\/08xii\/index.html\">VPXII<\/a> classmate&#8217;s story per month<\/li>\n<li>send out 2 novel manuscripts (past query stage)\n<ul>\n<li>finish 2nd draft of <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Waypoint Kangaroo<\/span> by end of March, start querying<\/li>\n<li>finish 2nd draft of <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">EndGame<\/span> by end of June, start querying<\/li>\n<li>finish 1st draft of <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Spaceship Castle<\/span> by end of September<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scriptfrenzy.org\/\">Script Frenzy<\/a> in April (dot-com heist caper)<\/li>\n<li>upload all home videos to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/sparckl\">YouTube<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/video.google.com\/videoplay?docid=-522031673422473369&amp;hl=en\">Google Video<\/a> by end of year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For you bean counters, this means I&#8217;m committing to finishing six pieces of short fiction and one-third of a novel draft per month.  That&#8217;s approximately 45,000 words a month, or 1,500 words a day.
