You thought I was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snout.org\/hotsheet\/2008\/02\/i-am-twelve-year-old-girl.html\">twelve-year-old girl<\/a>, right?  Well, that was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snout.org\/hotsheet\/2009\/04\/last-night-in-portland.html\">Tuesday<\/a>.  This is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shabbat\">Saturday<\/a>.  You gotta keep up here, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blue_Thunder#Cultural_references\">JAFO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last night, D and I watched the mostly atrocious <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Get Smart<\/span> movie remake, which suffers from the same problem as so many remakes these days&#8211;it trades on the brand name and packaging of the original without really understanding the appeal or capturing the spirit.  The <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Avengers<\/span> movie (remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0118661\/\">that<\/a>?) failed even worse, and though the new <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Battlestar Galactica<\/span> managed to make its own mark, I&#8217;m still dubious about the upcoming <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Star Trek<\/span> reboot.<\/p>\n<p>This version of <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Get Smart<\/span> just didn&#8217;t get the <a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/5018485\/can-old+school-jewish-humor-survive-in-the-future\">old-school Jewish humor<\/a> that permeated the original series; it pasted punchlines from the original series into scenes that had no setup or follow-through.  The retooled Maxwell Smart character simply didn&#8217;t match the old jokes (&#8220;Would you believe&#8230;,&#8221; &#8220;Missed it by <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">that<\/span> much,&#8221; <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">etc.<\/span>), in either personality or backstory.  It took its action setpieces too seriously, and its comedy not seriously enough.  Which is totally missing the point of <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Get Smart<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>~CKL<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know, I know.
